Nevada - Laughlin

Discovered by Don Laughlin in 1964. He built the Riverside Casino and Hotel In 1966. In 1967 another hotel/casino emerged and was named Bobcat Club, now known as the Golden Nugget.

The 1980s saw the construction of several more hotels and casinos. The Colorado Hotel (now the Pioneer), The Regency, Sam's Town Gold River (previously known as the River Palms and now the Laughlin River Lodge), and The Edgewater opened in the early 1980s. Other investors saw the growth as an opportunity to get in on the action. A second boom resulted in the construction of The Colorado Belle, Harrah's Del Rio, and The Ramada Express (now The Tropicana). The Flamingo Hilton, now known as The Aquarius, was built in 1990.

In 1987, Don Laughlin funded and built the Laughlin Bridge at a cost of $3.5 million. He donated the bridge to the states of Nevada and Arizona. The bridge carries 30,000 vehicles daily. Prior to the bridge being built, patrons and employees would have to cross at Davis Dam

There are nine hotel/casinos in Laughlin providing over 10,000 rooms, a RV Park, many restaurants, two museums, bowling centers, and a variety of shops.

Today, Laughlin is a vacation/entertainment destination. Mostly popular with those who enjoy the Colorado River and water activities, with a side of gambling. However, additional entertainment includes concerts throughout the year with main headliners and various other events like, the annual River Run (Motorcycles) in April, the River Regatta (float down the river) in August, and much more.

The Riverwalk is popular with visitors - various boat touring companies and events. Most popular spot along the Riverwalk is between the Colorado Belle and Edgewater, there are many events throughout Spring, Summer, and Fall. Riverwalk festivals and BBQ’s. Also, there is live weekend entertainment at the Loading Dock Stage outside the Colorado Belle

Davis Dam Information - No Tours Available

The Davis Dam Project was authorized April 26, 1941, and a contract for the construction of the dam and its associated structures was awarded in June 1942. However, work was halted after the War Production Board revoked priority ratings needed to obtain the necessary materials for construction. Work resumed in 1946, and the dam and powerplant were completed in 1953. Davis Dam is an earth and rock-fill embankment with a concrete spillway, gravity structure, intake structure and powerplant.

The primary purpose of Davis Dam is to re-regulate Hoover Dam releases to meet downstream needs including the annual delivery of 1.5 million acre-feet of water to Mexico. This is in accordance with the 1944 water treaty with Mexico.

The site was named in 1941 in honor of Arthur Powell Davis, Director of Reclamation from 1914 to 1932. Davis was one of a small group of men whose courage, foresight and vision sparked the beginning of Colorado River development.

The Davis Dam Powerplant is linked with a federal power distribution system operated by the Western Area Power Administration. The total system consists of 2,100 miles of high-voltage transmission lines serving 43 power substations in Arizona, Nevada, and California which supplies power to a number of utilities and other entities in this area.

Western's dispatching headquarters in Phoenix, the nerve center of the transmission system, can interconnect energy from the plants in the Lower Colorado River Basin with power generating facilities in the Upper Colorado River Basin and the Pacific Northwest. The facility can direct the flow of more than 4 billion kilowatt-hours of Colorado River hydroelectricenergy annually.

The Dam Height is: 200 feet, Crest length is 1,600 feet, and the Crest width is 50 feet. There are 5 generating units at the Powerplant.
